I just found out that the July/August issue of  Seattle Homes & Lifestyles Magazine is running my architectural photography of the Madrona Modern home I photographed for Seattle interior designer Robin Chell of Robin Chell Design and  architects David Bennett and Kim Lavacot of Bennett Lavacot Architecture. In fact they have chosen the above picture for the cover of the magazine. It was a beautiful and sophisticated house to photograph with a quiet, simple elegance. Today is the first day of June and the opening of an exhibition of a dozen panoramic urban landscapes at SRG Gallery in Seattle. I will publish some of them here over the course of the exhibition which will be up until the end of July. This first one was taken in New York City in January 2010. I love the view of Times Square from the air. Later on I will publish the panorama I took at ground level in Times Square. Other pictures were taken in Seattle, Paris and Prague.
SRG Gallery is located at 110 Union Street, Suite 300, Seattle across the street from the Seattle Art Museum. Photography by Daniel Sheehan who creates photographic solutions for publications and corporations and a Seattle Wedding Photographer with an artistic photojournalist style.

Twilight Seattle Skyline

April 27th, 2010

Had a recent request for a skyline of Seattle panorama and found this one on file from a couple of years ago. It was after the hour when you can still see a clear glimpse of Mt Rainier in the distance but I still like the balance of architecture and Space Needle to the right. If you look very closely though Mt. Rainier can be seen faintly behind the buildings in the center of the panorama. Queen Anne has a wonderful vista in the evening light. Water Towers

April 2nd, 2010

I have been driving by these water towers for the past few years and they always remind me of Bernd and Hilla Bechers who own the topic. The Bechers first collaborated on photographing and documenting the disappearing German industrial architecture in 1959. They were fascinated by the similar shapes in which certain buildings were designed. In addition, they were intrigued by the fact that so many of these industrial buildings seemed to have been built with a great deal of attention toward design. Together, the Bechers went out with a large format camera and photographed these buildings from a number of different angles, but always with a straightforward “objective” point of view. The images of structures with similar functions were then displayed side by side to invite viewers to compare their forms and designs. These structures included barns, water towers, storage silos, and warehouses. Bernd taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and influenced students that later made a name for themselves in the photography industry. Former students of Bernd’s included Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, and Candida Höfer.
I can not help but think of them when I see such water towers. As much as I wanted to photograph them, I put off shooting them for a long time. But as the Bechers never worked in panoramic format, my image is a divergence in at least one direction. Background on the Bechers from wikipedia. Recently I made some photographs of a residence in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle for the new website of Bennett Lavacot Architecture. The interior design was by Robin Chell Design. The owners of the house was thinking of moving to a new house they were going to build and were in discussion for the new design. After a fire destroyed some of the old house they were persuaded to rebuild on the same lot and this wonderful home was the result of the work of David and Kim of Bennett Lavacot Architecture and the owners of the property.

The first floor has this great open floor plan from the front where the living room through the dining room to the kitchen which opens into a private courtyard.

A marvelous detail of the fireplace.

The first floor powder room.

Stairs going up the the second level.

Above two images are from the master suite bathroom .
Below are two photos showing the private interior courtyard behind the kitchen, top and bottom off the media room. All in all a great place in a beautiful neighborhood.

I had an another assignment with Seattle interior designer Robin Chell of Robin Chell Design, to photograph some of her work at a number of Condo and apartment buildings in Bellevue and Redmond. This was taken in a lobby of an apartment building in Bellevue, Washington. Very elegant and clean design I would characterize Robin’s design at work here.

I had the chance to again work with Seattle interior designer Robin Chell of Robin Chell Design, this time photographing a lobby of an apartment building in Redmond, Washington. It was a difficult space to shoot. It had a compact floor plan but extended up three stories. In the photo here I resorted to shooting a number of vertical exposures and then stitching them together in photoshop into one photo.
The barrel distortion was inevitable but I like the way it shows the space without resorting to a fisheye lens.
